Adaptive vs Maladaptive Coping

Not all coping is created equal. Sometimes we lean on strategies that give short-term relief but create bigger problems later.

Maladaptive coping: ignoring problems, procrastinating, overworking, overeating, excessive screen time, alcohol or substance use. These may dull stress temporarily but don’t solve the underlying issue.

Adaptive coping: strategies that help you regulate emotions, solve problems, and restore balance — like mindfulness, exercise, journaling, setting boundaries, or reaching out for support.

Reflection Prompt: Think about your go-to coping habits. Which ones help you recover, and which ones leave you feeling worse afterwards? It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.
